New Hanvover County is a combination department. We have many different positions that make up our department. We have full-time, part-time, volunteer, college intern, and Fire Corps positions. All but the fire corps positions are suppression positions. To learn a little more about each of these positions, you may read the click on the individual position types below.
Full-Time Suppression Personnel

Our full-time firefighters are assigned to one of three shifts and work 24 hours at a time. Each member is assigned to specific fire apparatus at a fire station. Their specific duties vary by the type of apparatus they are assigned to.

Part-Time Suppression Personnel

Part-time firefighters can be assigned permanently to a shift or placed into a pool used to help fill vacancies as they occur. Our part-time firefighters are classified in three levels. Those levels are:

Volunteer Suppression Personnel

Being a combination department, we rely upon our volunteer personnel to help support our suppression and emergency response activities. Our volunteer firefighters are required to meet the same standards that our full-time staff do and are required to be certified before performing suppression and medical response tasks.

College Intern Suppression Personnel

New Hanover County Fire Rescue supports higher education through our college intern program. We provide free training, a fire station to live in, and partial tuition reimbursement. Our college interns are required to meet the same standards that our full-time staff do. All college interns are assigned to a station and apparatus on a specific shift. The college intern must at a minimum work each of their assigned shifts when not actually attending a college course.

The Fire Corps program consists of those individuals who do not have a desire to be active in fire suppression and emergency related tasks or those who cannot meet the standards in place for active suppression positions.

Fill out this application entirely following the instructions below. If an item does not apply, please type "N/A" in that field and move to the next.
Incomplete applications will not be processed.
To submit an application:
- Save a copy of the blank application to your local computer.
- Fill out completely including employment history and references.
- Save the completed application locally to your computer in a location that is easy for you to find. We recommend My Documents or the desktop.
- Open your e-mail client, i.e. Outlook, Yahoo, G-mail, etc.
- In the "To:" field enter: suwilliams@nhcgov.com
- In the "Subject:" field, enter: Volunteer Application
- In the body of the e-mail, simply introduce yourself.
- Attach the completed application that you saved to your local computer to the e-mail.
